With common Cats problems like Cat Chronic Renal Failure (CRF), we get prescription cat food from vets. As it seems serious enough to have such a condition, and vets are the doctors of animals, we won’t have a second thought about giving prescription cat food like Science Diet K/D, Royal Canin IVD Renal LP, or Purina NF.
Though according to the article, “Prescription pet food, is it worth the money?” by Boise Nutrition Examiner, it is not always.
First of all these prescription cat (/or dog) food has much grains, meat by products, and harmful preservatives. These ingredients are far from healthy choice for your cat. The only thing may help is that the substance called the DL-methionine and the low phosphorus rate. And the DL-methionine can be given separately if necessary.
It seems that there is not much point of buying these prescription cat food and even more so of giving them.
And you may wonder (1) why your vets recommend such a diet? (2) what can we do about it?
(1) According to the article above, the vets normally get 90% nutrition education by pet food company representative.(which is shocking to hear!) And there is monetary incentive to sell prescription cat food. (Much like when we get prescription medicine from doctors?)
(2) Do our own research. Things change, even the list of recalled cat food change everyday. By our being a responsible carer of our cats, it can only be possible for our cats to be Pleased & Healthy!
