For those of us that are ignorant of the term teacup cats it seems like quite a strange phenomenon when someone mentions the term. You may have heard of miniature cats being sold but teacup cats have a slightly different meaning to them.
When we talk of normal cats they weigh between eleven to fourteen pounds in females and around seventeen pounds in males. Though tea cup cats are miniature cats too but features of a tea cup variety differs from a normal one.
A tea cup cat never weighs more than eight pounds and at the lower level they remain at only three pounds. So when you see a tea cup cat being sold in the market for sale you can find out if the cat is a genuine tea cup or not by keeping these weight marks in mind.
When you are looking for a tea cup cat you should be concious of the traits of a tea cup cat otherwise you may be cheated by some cat breeder of doubtful quality. Any seller who would want to cheat you will offer a cat which is less than ten pounds in weight as a tea cup cat but this cat is a Persian cat of common variety. Those Persian cats which weigh ten pounds or less do not necessarily become a tea cup Persian.
Many people simply love to have a tea cup Persian cat as pet as they are so attractive. Persian cats are generally considered to be good house pets as they are cuddly and sweet.
Tea cup Persian variety of cats are very demanding of the undivided affection of the cat owner as they are extremely small and petit and the cat owner gives it willingly enough.
The question is, where do they come from? Teacup Persian cats are actually specially bred by a procedure known as inbreeding. This process involves mating the smallest sized cat from one specific breed with the smallest cat of a different breed. With each new generation the changes slowly start to creep in thus resulting in the teacup cat after a couple of turnovers.
The whole process of cutting down the size has a relation to the Japanese art of dwarfism of a tree. A similar process is used to dwarf the cats size. When we take the case of tea cup Persian cats however there are two methods involved in the procedure of dwarfism.
There is one process which is called achondroplasia. According to this procedure the principal gene grows while mutating. This mutation has a direct effect on the cats body. The balance thus created controls bone growth resulting in smaller bone structure. You will come across number of tea cup cats of various breeds out of which Persian cats are by far the most popular.
