Is Senior Cat Food necessary?

As we all want to look young forever (who doesn’t), I have never thought my cats, who is 10&7 years ancient are considered “Senior”. But according to Wiki Answers, it said cat older than 7 years ancient! What? Then my two cats need senior cat food?

I have never changed their diet since they are kitten, to “senior cat food”.

But is it necessary?

If the cat is not refusing the cat food or the cat food is substandard or unhealthy, it  is probably no need to change cat food unless it is to suit a cat’s stage of life or health condition.  Because really, changing cat foods frequently can cause problems like stomach upset.

And point to remember:

Senior cat food is not that much different as compared to regular food, it may just have lower calories and protein. Can be just even more filler from grain, which is the last thing a cat needs. Also more than the mark(i.e.”senior”) we want to pay attention to the ones with grain free, low-filler. Carbs come in the form of fruits and vegetables. For example fruit like blueberries, a very excellent antioxidant and vital  for older cats or ones with recurring infections that tax the immune system.

Just like us, people or cats age differently, so it may not be wise to choose depending on just age.

A Small Lesson In Getting Rid Of Fleas

Getting rid of fleas is a burden of pet ownership. Unless you are extraordinarily careful and extraordinarily lucky, all pet owners will be faced with some degree of flea issues. Flea infestations can be minor or can quickly develop into something major. The treatment of the problem differs depending upon on quickly you catch the problem.

The best way to deal with dog fleas is to prevent dog fleas. But, even with the best of intentions and discipline, our pets will at some time come into contact with fleas. The most effective way to deal with fleas is to take a multi-pronged approach. First, you must get rid of the fleas on your pet, Secondly, you must rid the immediate environment of fleas to prevent immediate re-infestation. Lastly, you must re-double your efforts towards flea prevention.

As recently as 10-15 years ago, getting rid of fleas was a tedious and arduous process that involved a lot of combing and picking. Thankfully, the pet health industry has made getting rid of fleas much simpler. There are a number of commercially available flea medications that work quickly and effectively. Some of the better known brands include Advantage and Frontline. Your pet will have some relief from fleas within the first 36 hours after taking the medication and the fleas can be really eliminated within 3-4 days. These solutions are applied topically and are non-toxic to your pet.

There are also ways to get rid of fleas naturally. More common methods include rubbing olive oil on to your pet’s skin. Working from the head to the tail, the olive oil drowns the fleas. Of course, this method can prove to be expensive for larger animals. A similar method uses baby powder or talcum powder.

It is vitally vital to rid your environment of fleas. Failure to get fleas out of your home will result in consecutive flea infestations on your pet. Fleas will be living everywhere your pet has been. That means attention must be paid to every bed, every sofa, and every carpet that may have played host to even the briefest pet nap. Be methodical. Start with the bedding and work your way to the living spaces of your main floor. The more effort you place into cleaning your home, the more likely you will be successful in solving your flea problems.

An ounce of prevention is the best remedy and the same can be said for getting rid of dog fleas. Some dog owners add some crushed garlic to their pet’s food and swear this is the best flea prevention method. Other people do not want to give their pet’s garlic for health reasons. Speak to your vet about what flea prevention methods might be right for you.
